Impressions (May 21, 2024)
This tobacco smelled
great in the tin. It had a just-right amount of
moisture, being neither too moist nor dry. It smelled
great, mostly of maple and figs, though I could
discern some cocoa notes and perhaps some rum or some
other alcohol.
Upon lighting I was
greeted by the most powerful sweetness I have yet
gotten from any pipe tobacco. Perhaps my corn-cob pipe
added to the sweetness, but I don't think it did much.
SWR is very sweet. It's not sickly-sweet, but I don't
see this being an all-day smoke. The taste is of
regular tobacco as far as I can tell----the sugary
taste of burnt leaf----but with the sweetness enhanced
beyond normal ranges.
As sweet as SWR is,
it's very mild, and I never experienced any tongue
bite from it. It takes a light very well, being eager
to burn, and sends up great thick clouds of smoke.
It's hard for me to tell how the blend might smell to
other people, but I smelled faint notes of cocoa on a
draft coming back to me on the wind.
I
don't particularly care for SWR's taste, but I don't
dislike it. I'm going to smoke this some more and
see what else I can notice as my palate adjusts to
the blend. I think I smoked too fast; it's easy for
me to do that with my Missouri Meerschaum General
pipe.
